Sony PlayStation servers hacked: Sales data for games directly owned by studios exposed

A massive cyber attack on Sony Playstation servers resulted in the leak of nearly 2 terabytes of data, including confidential information about the sales performance of the company’s first-party Sony PlayStation games.

Sony PlayStation games sold much better than the company represented

The leaked data reveals how well exclusive Sony Playstation games have sold on the PS4 and PS5 since the launch of the PS4, as well as the regional distribution of sales.

This data was posted online by ResetEra user ‘Lant_War’, who shared it link in table with sales data for the first games developed by Sony studios. Some of the extracted data from the table are:

  • Bloodbornethe critically acclaimed action RPG, has sold 7.6 million copies worldwide by the start of 2022. This is significantly higher than the official figure of 2 million copies released by Sony in 2015.
  • Uncharted Collection, which remastered the first three Uncharted titles for PS4, sold 9.98 million copies worldwide. This makes it one of Sony’s most successful remasters, along with The Last of Us on PS4.
  • MLB The Show, Sony’s baseball simulation, was sold almost exclusively in the US, with 96% of sales coming from that region. Europe and Asia contributed only 2% of the game’s sales each.

The table contains many details about games from studios directly owned by Sony, such as God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, Ghost of Tsushima and more.

At this point, very few reliable details are known about the PlayStation 5 Pro console. According to reliable source Tom Henderson, the console will launch sometime in November 2024, along with a significant improvement in Ray Tracing support for games and speed, 8K performance mode and also better 4K performance.

How Sony will ultimately achieve this remains to be seen, although the console is said to have faster memory and around 60 computing units, almost double the base PlayStation 5 model.
