Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will have custom CPU cores, but also likely a higher price next year
More news from this year’s Snapdragon Summit is also information about products that should be launched only next year, such as the next generation mobile chipset Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. The company announced that this chip will have custom CPU cores of Oryon technology, but also that means that this chip will probably be more expensive because of that.
This further indicates that even more expensive flagship smartphones await us in 2025.
This information was confirmed by Qualcomm Vice President Chris Patrick for the AndroidAuthority portal during this year’s company event in Hawaii. Patrick explains that custom CPU cores don’t necessarily mean more expensive, but he added that it allows the company to strike a different balance between price, power consumption and performance. Unfortunately, that balance is exactly the item that favors price growth.
„We expect Snapdragon Gen 4 to have some cost increases as we are really aiming for very impressive levels of performance“, he says.
In any case, it’s a little disappointing to hear that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 would actually be even more expensive than the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, as that further drags down the price of all the devices it will potentially power. Looking at past Qualcomm collaborations, those devices could include the Samsung Galaxy S25 series phones, the Xiaomi 15 series, and other flagship devices we can expect to see in 2025.
