Notepad on Windows 11 finally gets a character counter
Similar to the Microsoft Word program, the company decided to add a character counter to the Notepad application on the Windows 11 version of the operating system. The character counter will be located at the bottom of the screen, and these changes can be seen in the testing of the new version of the operating system within the Windows Insider program on the Canary channel.
In addition, Microsoft should receive other improvements in the latest update of Windows 11, such as the function of turning off news and articles that appear on widgets.
“When text is selected, the status bar displays the character count for the selected text and the entire document,” the Windows Insider team explains in a blog post about the new Windows features.
If, on the other hand, a part of the text is not marked, the character counter will display the characters in the entire document, providing a clear overview of the length of the document itself. It is the latest addition in a series of changes that have accompanied the Notepad program during this year. Among them is the ability to open tabs in the program, the option to automatically save the document without a pop-up window, dark mode and more.
When it comes to widgets, soon it will be possible to show only widgets, and at the same time hide the “feed” of news and articles that appear inside them. That will be a nice option, considering that it is usually full of low-quality news and generally unnecessary stuff that you don’t want to see as part of a built-in feature on a Windows operating system.
However, as always, we should not forget that these functions are being tested and it is possible that Microsoft will make some additional changes to them before their final introduction, but basically they remain the same. The version of Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 26010 will most likely reach a larger number of people already at the beginning of 2024.
