Minecraft is the best-selling game in the world, with over 300 million copies sold

With more than 300 million copies sold, almost 15 years old, Mincefrat is the best-selling game in the world today. GTA V, for example, is not even close to second place, with 185 million copies sold, considering that Minecraft reached the 200 million mark already in 2020.

Mojang Studios announced this achievement during the Minecraft Live event and showcased new features coming to the game, such as a courtroom with traps and mobs running through rooms and corridors. During the event, the new Star: Wars Path of the Jedi DLC as well as the Planet Earth DLC were announced, which are currently in development and will be available from November 7, that is, from the beginning of next year.

“Minecraft remains one of the best-selling games of all time… It's a milestone that no one could have dreamed of when we all made our first blocks,” said Helen Cheng, Head of Mojang Studios on the occasion of the fifteenth anniversary.

The exact launch date of this game is, on the other hand, a bit confusing. Markus Person, better known as Night, the creator of many games, first published Minecraft in 2009, but the game was officially released only at the end of 2011.

The first year is taken as the date of its “birthday”, and Person used the initial launch as an opportunity to improve the game, monitoring feedback and then releasing alpha and beta updates on behalf of his new company, Mojang, writes Engadget. Jens Bergesten then took over as chief designer at the end of 2010 in this company, and in November of the following year, Minecraft was officially launched for iOS.
