MediaTek Dimensity 9400 arrives from October with advanced AI capabilities
We will officially see the first MediaTek chipset based on the 3 nm production process of the second generation of TSMC lithography at the end of this year, in the period between October and December, when it will be launched, announced the CEO of the Taiwanese chip designer Rik Tsai. It is a MediaTek Dimensity 9400 chipset that, due to the production process on which it will be made, will bring increased energy efficiency and other benefits, and Tsai announces advanced AI capabilities.
In a similar period, towards the end of this year, we should also see a new chipset from the Taiwanese competitor, the American company Qualcomm, in the form of a Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, which should also be based on the advanced TSMC 3 nm production process.
The Dimensity 9400 should adopt the same CPU cluster as the Dimensity 9300 which set a new standard in the industry, meaning no energy-efficient cores in favor of performance cores. Although Rik Tsai did not provide a comparison of the performance of the two chipsets to the China Today portal, the portal states that the new chip will receive improved AI capabilities.
Some of the rumors indicate that the entire CPU cluster of the upcoming MediaTek chip will not only consist of large Cortex-X5 cores, although they also claim that the new chip will certainly not have E-cores. However, while we have learned about the new Cortex-X5 core, other high- and mid-power cores have not been revealed.
The new member of the Dimensity family should excel in on-device AI tasks, perhaps even exceeding the supported 33 billion parameters supported by the current Dimensity 9300 for large language AI models. We could also see the Dimensity 9400 gain support for LPDDR5T memory, since performing AI functions on the device requires faster and more efficient RAM.
Towards the end of last year, the Taiwanese company, speaking about efficiency, announced that it is closely cooperating with one of the most successful factories for the production of chips in the world – TSMC. In addition, MediaTek says it has developed an industry-first 3nm chipset, which boasts a 32 percent increase in power handling, with mass production starting this year.
Although MediaTek did not explicitly mention the name of the new chipset as Dimensity 9400, it is likely that it is a premium chip of this name, if we take into account the company’s mobile processor launch history.
The leap made by the Dimensity 9300 at launch, not only in relation to its predecessor but in the entire mobile processor industry, raises the expectations even higher for the next chipset, which will most likely bear the name Dimensity 9400. We will officially find out if it will live up to them in in the fourth quarter of 2024.
